What do you think of shorts with tights? Likey? Or no way, José?

H&M vs. Forever21: We love both H&M and Forever 21 for offering affordable, stylish fashions to us budgetistas! H&Ms are coming to malls across the country, moving in surprisingly right next to Forever 21s. So which one offers the best deals and best finds?
Some of you will be relieved to know that I finally found a lace skirt at a price I could afford.
This morning I arrived at Cherry Creek Mall at 9:30 a.m. to join the line into the grand reopening of the Forever 21 store. I met some great people waiting in line! The first 300 people into the store received gift cards--I got one for $10, and the Forever 21 staff cheered as we entered the store! They had a live dj, balloons, coupons, and lots of love for all of us. Found my lace skirt and picked up a pleather brown one too. I plan to wear the lace skirt with a long gray or cream sweater, belted, this fall. The newly remodeled Forever 21 store and new fall styles look great! When I visit Forever 21 and have the time, I usually try on a pile of clothes, many of them things I'd never really buy or wear--it's more like playing dress-up for an hour or so. One of those items I recently tried on was a Bodycon miniskirt--too short and fitted for me, I assumed. But once I slipped that baby on (or rather tugged it up), I was stunned to find that all my usual bulges weren't bulging! The Bodycon line is made of thick knits with plenty of compression--try it out--you might be surprised!
Lovely to imagine curling up with a big scarf while the snow falls outside or taking a walk through huge snowflakes.
This scarf--light heather gray, almost natural colored--is just the thing--found it in a sale bin at Forever 21 about a week ago--only $4.99! Bring on the cold front! I love reading British fashion blogger Avril Keys’ daily blog: Schoolgate Style (www.schoolgatestyle.com). What’s so nice about Avril is that she’s not pretentious about fashion—she’s a mom of three kids trying not to spend too much like the rest of us. She’s also gracious and funny. Here she is in the Boden Stripy Tunic, which is driving me crazy because it’s on sale right now for only $46.40 with free shipping—is this a must-have item? Forever 21 can be hit or miss in many categories, but you can count on their basics. I live in all three of these items. The leggings are awesome--they keep their shape and never pill. The Forever 21 tees fit better than any others I have. The $2.50 camis used to be too short, but now they make them in longer lengths. I've checked prices on these basics in every store I've visited, and no one comes close.
Please share some of the best deals you've found out there. What do remember wearing as a child, teenager, or young adult? Do these memories influence the fashions you are drawn to today? A query on this topic came in to OMF from Jessy Randall... "Do you think that memory could play a role in our fashion choices? I love the TV show Top Chef, and the chefs and judges on that are always talking about how memory plays into our feelings about food. If we taste something that reminds us of something from childhood, perhaps we particularly like or dislike it now. I've been thinking about this because I realized this week that I was wearing a sundress that may harken back to a childhood sundress of mine, and that might be why I like it. I had on a dress with a little bit of that sort of elastic top in the back, so the fabric is all crinkled up just under the shoulder straps, you know what I mean? And suddenly I remembered that when I was about six years old I had a sundress made of fabric covered in pink elephants, a dress my mom made me, and that was my favorite, favorite dress, my go-to dress at age six. If it was clean, I wore it (if it was warm enough). And that's sort of how this other dress is for me now! I'm not saying we should all seek out clothes like we wore when we were kids, but I wonder if there's some of that going on unconsciously when we choose new clothes. Jessy Randall (http://personalwebs.coloradocollege.edu/~jrandall/)" Response from OMF: Yes! I completely agree that we are forever influenced by our childhood memories when we choose our duds. When I was a girl, we lived for a time in a small town, and I was given a gift of a top with butterfly sleeves from the nicest store in town: Anthony's. I felt so elegant and fashionable in that top, I have forever been drawn to tops with that style of sleeve. In college I wore crisp white shirts and shorts for school and later jeans and plain white t-shirts for play--I still turn to these simple combinations when I need to feel tidy or cool. I'll carry your comment in my thoughts as I look at clothes, Jessy. Thank you so much for stirring up memories for us! |
